Glass blowing is an instant and dynamic art. Most glass makers only use there tools to experiment and developments that happen on the end of the iron or Punty and rarely start life on paper like most craft based skills. Glassblowing is an art that has been developing for thousands of years but what is unusual. Glass work is more than an education it is a discovery of glass art or decorative glass adventure, re-discovering lost glass techniques that have been lost in time. Giving away the secrets of making glass would have certainly cost you your life during the reign of the pharaohs

The art of glass making was so well regarded in Venice during the eleventh century the laws were past regarding its manufacture. To protect the secrets of the methods which they used, the Venetians moved their entire glass industry onto the island of Murano, where armed guards walked the streets at night to protect the workers. The workers themselves were executed if they betrayed the secret of glass making, but if they were loyal to the industry they became prosperous glass artisans.

The glass blowing demonstrations are an opportunity to witness, at close quarters and feel the heat of the furnace will keep you warm, in the coming months. See our calendar of events. Those with previous glass experience may see things that remind them of their past. So many do stop for a chat and reminiscing of their years in the great glass factories Langhams, Dartington, Pilkington, and Waterford. With the closing of these factories the skills were lost These conversations are valuable so please say hello.

The glass demonstrations are run every hour over the two or three days could be seen as a workshop and offer introduction to glass making. The glassblowing examples we have put together shows of different glass making techniques so you can experience and quickly understand the feel for working with molten glass and to learn the basics of glassblowing, under the guidance of a qualified glassworker.
