Stemware

Wine glasses developed to new levels in the eighteenth century in Britain. Glasses like the baluster became the vogue, it was a architectural styled vessel and named after the nature of its stem. The industry reached a climax at this time produceing glasses with multi sided stems different shaped bumps, tears in the stems, with perfectly trapped air bubbles. The beaded dollops and bubbles probably developed into air twist and opaque twist glasses. Later in the century faceted stems became popular. The Wineglasses of the eighteenth century were engraved and decorated with shields emblems and the like to celebrate great occasions. The Jacobite and Williamite glasses are good examples this. Family crests and armorials were also engraved on glasses.

There are only a few of people who can produce stemware in this style as the techniques and skills have been mostly forgotten. Please feel free to touch and feel the pieces on display.
